USA South 2017 Men's Soccer Awards Announced

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2017 All-Conference awards for men's soccer. Greensboro College's Carlos Barragan was named Player of the Year, Methodist University's Zvi Ferrari claimed Rookie of the Year honors while Maryville College's Pepe Fernandez collected Coach of the Year accolades. Additionally, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team, consisting of one member from each competing school.

All awards are voted on by the men's soccer coach at each institution.

Barragan, a junior midfielder from Winter Garden, Florida, becomes just the third Greensboro men's soccer player to be named USA South Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year in his career, joining Duncan Edwards and his head coach Tony Falvino. Barragan currently leads the USA South with 38 points on 16 goals, which ranks second in the League, and six assists. In Conference-only contests, Barragan scored seven times with five assists. For his efforts this fall, Barragan was named First Team All-Conference for the third consecutive season. Finally, he was named USA South Player of the Week once this year.

Ferrari, a Silver Spring, Maryland, freshman forward, becomes the fourth Monarch in program history to be named USA South Rookie of the Year. He currently leads all League rookies with ten goals this season. This total ranks him tied for sixth among all Conference performers. Ferrari has also added three assists and two game-winning goals this season. In USA South-only contests, his seven goals and 17 points led all rookies. Ferrari earns First Team All-Conference honors as a forward to go along with two USA South Rookie of the Week accolades this fall.

Fernandez, in his 29th season as the head of the Scots, earns his second consecutive and third-career USA South Coach of the Year honor. His team collected the USA South Regular Season West Division championship by posting a League record of 9-1-1. Maryville currently boasts a 15-2-1 overall record and is still alive in the USA South Men's Soccer Tournament as the top-seed from the West Division.
